Mechanical Massage or Healing Hands
February 21, 2006
Massage providers come from a wide range of cultural, ethnic, religious (spiritual), geographic, and educational backgrounds. For a variety of reasons, these people have found the desire to lay their hands on the bodies of family, friends, acquaintances, clients, and complete strangers.

My first experience in receiving what I’ll refer to as “formalized” massage, was at a sports club in a suburban area outside of New York City. I used to play racquetball there weekly, and saw the sign of an offering by a female licensed therapist. The session was in a cold room generally used as a nursery or place where parents could drop off their young children during the day, while they attended to the physical regiment of jazzercise. The massage was what I thought at the time as good, and I went back a few more times.

I guess I need to state that as an artist (musician), nature lover, and aware of my spirituality; I was always opened minded to exploring alternative concepts. When I was accepted to medical school, and decided not to go in favor of alternative medicine practices (Osteopathy), I realized I was more interested in keeping the body healthy, rather than treating a “sick” body. This led to many years of growth incorporating yoga, nutrition, vitamin therapy, meditation, and a better understanding of my body.

I went out to California in the mid to late 1980’s due to other circumstances. While pursuing the challenges of building a business, I realized that the schedule of my routine was more stressful than I desired. A friend suggested that I go for a massage, and made a call to her friend who provided massage for patients at a chiropractors office. Debbi and I made arrangements to have a session where I was staying. Having a few dozen massages under my belt, I quickly noticed something different about Debbi. After setting up her table and putting some New Age music into her portable CD player (both new aspects of playing music), Debbi proceeded to do some body movements and breathing techniques to get her body into the “right energy”. I don’t know if it was because she was introduced to me through a mutual friend, or that I was new to California, or she sensed new to this type of massage; but halfway through she broke the silence and asked how I felt. I told her I felt good. She told me she was asking because she “felt my energy, and that I was not letting go and wrapped like a pretzel”. She engaged me in conversation asked if I would trust her, and I said I would. I guess sometimes it’s easier to be open with strangers. Feeling disarmed and non threatened, we discussed some past my past wounds, current fears, and massage experiences. She asked why I wouldn’t “let go and just be” in her presence. I was very honest. I told her I was afraid I would get physically aroused. She smiled, and told me that was normal. And that as a healthy human being that my sensual energy is part of me, and that at times, this energy may manifest itself during massage. She asked if I would trust her, and I felt totally safe with her. As we started the massage session all over again, she told me to focus on the music, choose one of my meditative techniques, and take a moment to reflect on my place in the Universe.

The massage session became one that I never experienced before. I felt the energy, I felt the areas of great intensity than others, I felt something above the top of my head (my own aura?). When it was time to turn over and I was forced to “come to” a bit to move my body, I realized I was no longer covered with a draping towel, but completely naked. It was comfortable. I do remember becoming physically aroused at one point (my previous fear), and as far as I could tell, Debbi paid no mind to it. At the end of the session, I put on a robe and took some time to compose. We talked for quite a bit afterward. She explained about my Chakras, my solar plexus, and other aspects of my energy that she felt. Upon questioning, she told me how she was fortunate to have traveled to the far east and taught basic concepts by a mentor to a Tao Master. I was intrigued. I needed to learn this. The ability to be a “giver” and a “conduit” for people to be themselves, to enable them to “let go” and be at peace with their path.

I studied with Debbi and she turned me on to multiple modalities of body work and energy work. As we exchanged “massage” on one another, I found that we were experiencing intuitiveness we each other, often not mattering who was giving and who was receiving. We also recognized that we were compassionate and respectful of the Universal Love that was abounded. This means that we did not have sex! Yeah, we talked about it. But sex is just sex, and what we were experiencing was greater than sex. Instead, we decided to understand and explore more about the aspect of this sensual energy. All I knew was that it was always obvious if I became physically aroused, but like the rest of you women, while working on Debbi I couldn’t tell most of the time.
